Call It Something Horrible So I Can Get Custody

Is it a case of a homemade agoge, or is this a case of teaching a kid that you get what you ask for?
FORT BRAGG, NC -- A soldier in the Army Special Operations Command is under investigation for a video showing his young son fighting with another youngster.

The video shows two youngsters pushing and hitting each other while an unidentified man urged one to stay in the fight.

Wow! Sounds pretty brutal and uncivilized, right? Well, I watched the video and although it wasn’t as nice as watching a puppy chase butterflies through a field of daisies, it wasn’t an armed, mano-a-mano gladiatorial fight to the death. In fact, it reminded me a lot of my childhood with my brothers and learning a thing or two about keeping your hands to yourself. If you take a shot at your older brother, I have learned, he will soundly whip your ass. Brothers beating the hell out of each other is a fact of life growing up so I really don’t see the big deal. Did the dad video the fight? Yup. Was that wrong? Maybe… I don’t know what his purpose was in filming it so I can’t say for certain but I’m leaning toward the “it wasn’t a great idea” camp.

This whole thing wouldn’t be such a big deal if his ex-wife wasn’t trying to get custody of the two boys. Let’s face it: in today’s world if the father has full custody of the children that means that the mother was such a piss poor example of a human being that a judge saw fit to keep the children away from her. Courts almost always side with the mom in custody battles and she lost hers so there is probably something very wrong with this woman. Maybe what’s wrong with her is that she thinks it’s okay to raise kids that can hit each other without any fear of retribution?

You can go hear and read the article and watch the video, but don’t expect to see anything as shocking as they’re trying to make it out to be. It’s not a “little cock fight” as the aggrandizing ex-wife paints it to be… it’s more like a couple of 2 year olds slapping each other.

I've heard quite a few folks say that public affairs people do absolutely nothing... that they're nothing but a bunch of FOBBITS who don't do squat for the military. In some cases that's true, but in most cases, I can tell you from personal experience, that we are right out there telling the Army story alongside our brave troops.

Such is the story of Det 5. Det 5 was an Armed Forces Vietnam Network unit in 1967 whose members became heroes during the Tet Offensive.
