CHICAGO – President-elect Obama planned to honor fallen troops Tuesday, taking a short break from his primary task of mapping out his administration to mark Veterans Day.
The Democrat was slated to lay a wreath in Chicago, accompanied by Tammy Duckworth, a disabled Iraq war veteran and 2006 failed congressional candidate who now is the Illinois governor's veterans affairs director.
Aside from the brief public appearance, Obama planned to huddle in private with top advisers planning for the transfer of presidential power in January.
Because actually taking time to talk real, live, living veterans of our nation’s military would take far too much time and effort. Talking to living vet might also force him to admit that there are indeed men and women out there who put their asses on the line everyday defending this country’s freedom and security… but why would he want to acknowledge that when he’s planning for his civilian national security force that is “just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded" as the military?
It’s nice to remember our fallen comrades always… but today is the national holiday where we reach out to the living veterans and thank them for their service and sacrifice. And with that, I thank each and every one of my fellow veterans for their service, sacrifice, and fellowship. There are some of us that will be lifelong friends because we’ve shared misery that creates a bond that cannot be broken even in death and there are some of us that detest each other for one reason or another and may well go to our graves detesting each other… but we are all vets and our service is what counts.
Regardless of whether you fall into those two categories or somewhere in between, thank you all for your service.
